Sergei Donatovich Dovlatov

Sergei Dovlatov, one of the most popular Russian immigrant writers of the late 20th century was born on 3 September 1941 in Ufa. His works are undying classic, interesting and relatable to readers no matter the age, erudition, or, according to Dovlatov himself, “the level of intellectual fault-finding”.

In the USSR Sergei used to work as a journalist, a literary secretary and a tour guide in Alexander Pushkin Mikhaylovskoye Museum Reserve. However the writer became truly famous only in immigration, where his books such as “Pushkin Hills”, “The Zone: A Prison Camp Guard's Story” and “A Foreign Woman” appeared in large editions. Nowadays a festival dedicated to Dovlatov takes place in Russia every year and his works are included in “100 books for schoolchildren” list by the Ministry of education.

Among his most well-known works, there are “A Foreign Woman” – a story about Russian immigrants of the third wave in America, “The Suitcase” – a collection of stories dedicated to “the contents of an immigrant’s suitcase”, “Pushkin Hills”, written during his work in Mikhaylovskoye and deals with the topic of superfluous man. His books “The March of the Single People” and “Craft: A Story in Two Parts” contain feuilletons, essays and articles edited by Sergei Dovlatov for “The New American”, a liberal Russian-language newspaper for immigrants.
