Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk is one of the oldest cities of Russian North, the capital of Arkhangelsk region. Its area (589 913 km²) is larger than the area of France (547 030 km²).

The city is situated in the mouth of the river Northern Dvina, not far from its flowing into the White Sea.

It was awarded the Order of Lenin and has an honorary title of City of military glory.

Arkhangelsk was founded in 1583 by the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. A wooden fortress was built around Archangel Michael Monastery on the cape Pur-Navolok in order to protect it from the possible attack by the Swedes.

Arkhangelsk has its coat of arms.

In 1984 a stele was erected here in honor of Arkhangelsk’s 400th anniversary — a bow of the boat and an angel with folded wings.

In 16th -17th centuries Arkhangelsk had become an important center of Russian foreign trade and started to actively develop and build up. The port had become the city center; it was the only port in Russia at the time.

In 1693 Peter I established a shipyard where the first trading and war ships were built.

In 1870 Northern Shipping Company (the first one in Russia) was founded in Arkhangelsk.

In the end of the 18th century by the decree of the empress Catherine II the first marine school in Russia was opened. Five years later it was transferred to Arkhangelsk.

The port was strategically important during The Great Patriotic War as well. It received more than 4 million tons of cargo supplied by lend-lease.

Nowadays Arkhangelsk is an important sea and river port and is deservedly called “Gates of Arctic”.

This is where Russian icebreaker fleet was initiated. And more than 200 expeditions were sent from the banks of the White Sea to explore the North Pole.

Industry is developing actively in Arkhangelsk today: wood, paper, cellulose, fish. The diamonds are mined here as well. The largest European mine is situated in only 100 kilometers from Arkhangelsk.

This is where the first Russian international trade fair took place - Margaritinskaya fair.
